Demat ratio on ZSE Depository up in Q3

The dematerialisation ratio was up to 80.41% in the third quarter as the ZSE Depository intensifies its campaign for investors to keep their shares in electronic form.

Latest data from the ZSE Depository shows a total of 132 deposits were processed in the third quarter while the total number of shares that were dematerialised in Q3 2022 was 44,464,741.

“The ZSE continues on a demat campaign to increase the dematerialisation penetration ratio for both individuals and institutional investors who are still holding their share in physical form,” the ZSE Depository said in a newsletter for the thirds quarter.

A unit of the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, ZSE Depository began operations in October 2021, becoming the second central securities depository after Chengetedzai.

As at September 30, the ZSE Depository had 14 issuers, four of which are Exchange traded funds. The ZSE depository has the responsibility for recommending entities to be admitted as depository participants on the ZSE. The participants are clearing members whose role is to perform the clearing function on behalf of the ZDE depository.

The demat ratio has been on the increase since the beginning of the year. It ended the first quarter at 71.6% and rose to 73.63% in the second quarter.

Trades executed were down to 6597 from 10,586 in the second quarter.

Volumes traded dipped 40.59% to 96,507,731 from 162,457,019 in the second quarter. The value traded dropped to $8,469,991,653.44 from ZWL$9,721,930,768.59.

The ZSE Depository market share was 30.28% in the third quarter down from 31.29% in the previous quarter.
