Crippling power blackouts hits Mutare

SYDNEY SAIZE IN MUTARE

The City of Mutare has been hit by crippling power blackouts owing to faults and load shedding.

The development has resulted in some business people in the city counting their losses as perishable goods have gone bad owing to power cuts that go for long hours.

Mutare businessman Ozious Chitambo said he had lost large amount of beef, pork, fish and chicken after they went bad as a result of long hours of power cuts.

“I am depressed as I have lost so much meat as the freezers could not take longer times without power. My beef, pork, chicken among other have gone bad and have to through it away,” Chitambo said.

“It is dicey to stock much meat these days as we have been experiencing more power outages than ever before,” said the businessman who has a chain of shops around the city.

Another entrepreneur Oliver Hanzu said: “It is becoming difficult to plan on stocking perishables. We are not sure of when we will have a power cut and for how long that would last.”

Some domestic homes have not been spared as some residents have raised concern over losing their electrical appliances as a result of unscheduled power cuts caused by faults.

Efforts to get a comment from the power utility ZESA were futile.
