Chitando appoints new board for MMCZ

PHILLIMON MHLANGA

Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando on Tuesday appointed a new board for the Mineral Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ).

The new seven-member board is chaired by former Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation board chairman, David Murangari. Murangari is a former permanent secretary in the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.

Other members are Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe chief executive officer, Isaac Kwesu, former Hwange board member Jermister Chininga, Rose Mukogo, Ignatius Tichivangana, Mercy Manyuchi and Esther Maravanyika.

MMCZ had no substantive board and only had former Mines and Mining Development permanent secretary, Francis Gudyanga, as the acting chairperson and a lone board member on the firm from 2013 until last year, a situation which violated basic tenets of good corporate governance.

Chitando challenged the new board to “hit the ground running” as the State controlled firm is expected to play a significant role in feeding the ministry’s vision to make mining one of the leading contributors to the revival of the country’s economy.
