Chikura retires from DPC after 15 years

HARARE – Deposit Protection Corporation chief executive John Chikura, is leaving the organisation with effect from July 31, 2018 after having served in that position for 15 years.

Chikura is the founding CEO of the DPC.

DPC is a scheme which was established by government to protect depositors against the loss of their insured deposits placed with member institutions licenced to operate banking or finance business. As an integral component of an effective financial safety net, a Deposit Protection Scheme enhances consumer protection by providing explicit protection to depositors.

Besides compensating depositors in the event of a bank failure, DPC actively participates in the resolution of failing or failed member institutions and liquidation of closed banks.

Contacted for comment, Chikura confirmed to Business Times that he is leaving the organisation and will take time to rest after spending 15 years at the deposit protection unit.

“I am leaving the organisation with effect from July 31, 2018 and this after I had spent three five-year terms. I am the one who started this organisation from scratch. I am leaving because my contract is coming to an end,” said Chikura.

Before DPC, Chikura worked as an administration manager and general manager for Cluff Resources and Lonrho Zimbabwe. He was appointed as a finance and company secretary for Southern Africa Reinsurance Limited.

He is former chairman of the Board of Trustees for  ZimRe group pension fund. As a certified Trainer, he attended the Commonwealth Association for Corporate Governance and International Monetary Fund training courses and facilitated on the Director Training programmes for Southern African Development Community (SADC), Institute of Directors of Zimbabwe and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.

Chikura holds an MBA in Finance and Banking (Manchester University) and is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.
