Colonialism and its after-effects had a significant impact on African leadership. In order to subjugate Africans, European powers imposed their own systems of governance, often disregarding indigenous structures.
This disruption led to a loss of traditional leadership systems and created a power vacuum that has had lasting effects on post-colonial Africa. However, with its diversity of culture, it can only be charismatic leadership that can rescue the continent.
The concept of charisma was introduced by sociologist Max Weber. According to Weber, charisma is a rare and innate quality that some individuals possess, which makes them capable of exerting influence over others. This theory implies that charismatic leadership is an inherent trait and cannot be acquired or developed through learning.
