HARARE – Two members of the MDC Alliance legal team from South Africa arrived in the country today ahead of the Constitutional Court case on Wednesday, in which the party’s leader Nelson Chamisa is challenging the Presidential election results.
South African Advocates, Tembeka Ngcukaitobi and Dali Mpofu, will complement a team of local lawyers led by Advocate Thabani Mpofu during trial.
Nkululeko Sibanda, spokesperson for MDC Alliance confirmed the arrival of the lawyers.
“Our team of international lawyers has arrived. The two celebrated lawyers are at the chambers,” he said.
The MDC Alliance last week approached the Constitutional Court challenging the results announced by Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) that President Emmerson Mnangagwa won 50,8 percent and Chamisa polled 44,3 percent.
The Alliance alleged that the votes were rigged in favour of Mnangagwa.
The MDC Alliance is being supported by 1 000 lawyers as well in their court application.
ZANU PF has also engaged a team of legal experts led by Advocate Lewis Uriri to defend Mnangagwa’s electoral victory before Chief Justice Luke Malaba and his bench.
ZANU PF has hired actuary, Douglas Hoto, to help them in the calculations of the elections figures and MDC Alliance has roped in Kenyan statistician Dr Outmbar Edgar Ouko. Both experts have signed affidavits to be used in the courts during the hearing.
