Big businesses under threat

Government interventions on pricing of goods and services could result in small players driving out big businesses, chartered accountant Elles Mukunyadze has warned.

The administration has forced all formal businesses to price their goods and services using the interbank rate.

This, however, is not the case with smaller or informal traders, threatening the viability of the big enterprises.

“You shouldn’t underestimate the amount of volume that the small players are actually moving and controlling the market.

“They become a big threat to your big businesses and unless something changes in the next two years or so you will see the big players actually suffering because of that uneven regulation,” Mukunyadze said.

He added: “Our regulation doesn’t really cover everyone at the same level. So, you find your big players are highly regulated but the small players are able to do whatever they want.”
