Amalgamated Brands: The name behind some of Zimbabwe’s best-known and loved products

STAFF WRITER

Across Zimbabwe today, someone is likely opening a packet of Spuds, spreading Sun Jam on a slice of bread or serving Cashel Valley baked beans with a family meal, sharing Willards snacks with friends, or enjoying Charhons biscuits over a cup of tea.

These are products Zimbabweans know and love. Many of us grew up with them. For years they have filled school lunchboxes, family kitchens, tuckshops and supermarket shelves. Yet many consumers may not know that the companies behind them are part of a larger corporate group.

Amalgamated Brands is a Zimbabwean integrated food and beverages company comprising Cairns Holdings Ltd (Cairns), Cailogistics and Cailo Marketing Services (CMS). Each serves a distinct market need, but their capabilities are closely linked.

In simple terms, Cairns makes. Cailogistics moves. CMS merchandises.

Amalgamated Brands provides a common corporate identity for these businesses while preserving the names and relationships they have built over time. The Group’s story is therefore not only about ownership, but also about the different capabilities it brings together.

Group’s Chief Executive Officer, Anele Zunga, explains: “Amalgamated Brands brings together businesses that Zimbabweans have known and interacted with for many years, even if they were not always familiar with the Group behind them. Through Cairns, Cailogistics and CMSs, we are involved in making products, moving them to market and supporting the businesses that sell them. Each company contributes distinct experience and strengths. Amalgamated Brands is the common home that brings those capabilities together, while allowing each business to continue building on what it does best.”

A history built around familiar products

At the heart of the Group’s manufacturing operations is Cairns, one of Zimbabwe’s established food manufacturers, with a history stretching back decades.

Its roots can be traced to 1947, when Willard Foods was incorporated. Over the years, the business expanded into beverages, fruit and vegetable processing, groceries, snacks and confectionery.

Today, Cairns manufactures at facilities in Harare, Mutare and Marondera. Its portfolio includes familiar names such as Spuds, Willards, Chompkins, Charhons, Cashel Valley, Sun Jam, Tip Top and Mukuyu Wines, among others.

Behind these products are manufacturing facilities, production teams and more than 2,100 employees whose work is rarely visible to the person making a purchase.

Making the product is one thing. Getting it to market is another.

Anyone familiar with manufacturing or retail knows that producing goods is only part of the job. Products still need to reach customers and consumers, often across long distances and through networks of suppliers, warehouses and retailers.

This is where Cailogistics, another Amalgamated Brands business, comes in.

Cailogistics provides transport and distribution services, moving goods between production and distribution points. With a fleet of more than 300 owned and hired vehicles, the company supports the movement of products through the supply chain.

For consumers, logistics may simply mean finding a favourite product on the shelf, in the same store, week after week. Behind that convenience are teams coordinating vehicles, deliveries and routes to keep goods moving.

What happens once products reach the market?

The Group’s third business, CMS, operates closer to the point of purchase.

Established in 2016, CMS provides merchandising, sales support and workforce contracting services. Its activities include managing merchandising teams, supporting promotions, improving product visibility in stores and providing personnel to businesses across different sectors.

At every point of purchase, neatly displayed products, well-executed promotions and well-coordinated merchandising teams are all among the activities supported by CMS.

Its services also extend beyond point-of-sale execution into recruitment, training, payroll administration, events support and other business services.

Different businesses. Distinct strengths. One Group.

Together, the three businesses demonstrate the breadth of Amalgamated Brands.

Cairns manufactures products Zimbabweans know, love and use. Cailogistics provides transport and distribution capabilities, while CMS provides the people and services that help businesses connect products with customers and consumers.

Together, these capabilities give Amalgamated Brands a presence across interconnected areas of manufacturing, distribution and commerce, and a direct hand in keeping its products consistently available. In that regard, the group is striving to be the most trusted consumer goods group in every market it serves – with the brands people find first and choose most often.

These activities contribute to Zimbabwe’s economy. According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT), manufacturing accounted for 16.8% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product in 2025, while wholesale and retail trade contributed 11%.

These figures place the Group’s operations in context. Manufacturing supports production and employment, logistics connects businesses to markets, and merchandising helps products reach consumers.

What makes Amalgamated Brands unusual is that, while its corporate name may still be relatively unfamiliar to the public, much of the business behind it is not. Its operating companies have established histories, capabilities and relationships in the market.

The next time you pick up a packet of Spuds or reach for a tin of Cashel Valley baked beans, there is a bigger story behind it than you might realise, and a group working to make those brands the ones Zimbabweans find first and choose most often.

That story now has a name: Amalgamated Brands.
