ZINARA shells out ZWL$17bn for road rehab

BUSINESS REPORTER
The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) has set aside a ZWL$17bn budget for the rehabilitation of the country roads with disbursements to local authorities expected to start mid next month, board chairman George Manyaya has said.
Zimbabwe’s roads are dilapidated with the government last year declaring all roads state of national disaster to fast-track their rehabilitation.
The disbursement will be up from ZWL$9.5bn given to local authorities last year to give a facelift on the country’s roads.
“The allocations comprise disbursements made directly to rural and urban councils for works done through the Department of Roads and the DDF,” Manyaya said.
He said ZINARA will undertake some “innovative steps” to also source alternative funding to augment resources for roads rehabilitation.
ZINARA chief executive officer Nkosinathi Ncube said the organisation expects to rake in ZWL$34bn this year from toll and license fees with 95% of the funds earmarked for road rehabilitation and the repayment of the loan they got from the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
