ZIMRA intensifies war against corruption

SUKOLUHLE NDLOVU IN GWERU

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) says it is stepping up efforts to deal with corruption among its employees.

Speaking at a ZIMRA breakfast meeting held in Gweru on Tuesday this week, ZIMRA commissioner general, Regina Chinamasa said the dishonest and fraudulent conduct of some of its workers and other stakeholders has resulted in ZIMRA losing millions of dollars.

She said ZIMRA has a mandate of collecting revenue for the country, which requires integrity from all employees of the tax collector.

“We have put in place policies that will provide guidance into the expected behavior of our employees to make sure that they do their duties with fairness and transparency.

“We also have mechanisms where we try to persuade our employees to mold the right behavior as guided by our values of commitment, integrity, transparency, fairness and innovativeness,” Chinamasa said.

She said disciplinary hearings are being implemented against staff members who engage in corruption and would be discharged if found guilty.

“From there, we proceed to deal with assets that would have been acquired through illegal means. In most cases those assets are forfeited so that the institution recovers the lost money.

“We have partnered with Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission and the National Prosecuting Authority to institute asset forfeiture,” Chinamasa said.
