The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS), this week, partnered the country’s largest diversified financial services provider Old Mutual, listed retailer Ok Zimbabwe, Mimosa Mining Company and Nyaradzo, for a campaign to save the environment

The event, which also saw trees planted at several points,  was held in Cross Dete in Matebeland North Province.

ZRCS humanitarian ambassador and popular musician Alick Macheso performed at the Friends of the Environment Walkathon courtesy of the humanitarian organisation which roped him in to aid advocacy around environment protection.

Macheso’s role was to advance messages around community development and alleviation of human suffering.

ZRCS secretary general Maxwell Phiri said they were ready to participate in any programme aimed at fostering resilient communities in the future adding that Macheso was a key figure in their community education programmes, given his influence.

“Though we are always active in disaster management we also do some awareness programmes. We have partnered organisations such as Nyaradzo, Mimosa Mining Company, OK Zimbabwe and Old Mutual in creating awareness.  Our ambassador Macheso is also key in that campaign,” Phiri said.

A massive procession was held from Cross Dete to Binga.

Macheso who was accompanied by Red Cross officials and his full band said it was an honour performing for a noble cause.

“We must save the environment and want to thank ZRCS and other organisations for the noble cause. Let us all unite in creating environmental conservation awareness,” said Macheso.
