ZESA plans to construct four new power generation units

State-owned power utility, ZESA Holdings, is planning four new thermal units—Hwange 9, 10, 11, and 12—to address chronic electricity shortages.

The plan was disclosed by ZESA Holdings Group Acting CEO, Engineer Cleopas Nyachowe.

He said the Hwange name does not necessarily indicate location.

“We are calling them Hwange 9, 10, 11, and 12, but they may not necessarily be based around this area,” he said.

“Most likely Hwange 9 and 10 will be closer to this location, and 11 and 12 will be in another area.”

Nyachowe emphasized that the thermal expansion will run alongside renewable energy investments. “This is an initiative that we are pushing, of course, together with green energy initiatives like solar and geothermal,” he said, signalling a dual strategy to boost energy security while supporting cleaner alternatives.
