Former President Donald Trump completed a historic and dramatic comeback in American politics to defy all odds and become the country’s 47th President following Tuesday elections.
Trump was under immense pressure amid plans to foil his comeback through a litany of criminal charges and two assassination attempts.
He also faced former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle who vigorously campaigned against him.
World leaders have been falling over each other to congratulate him and they include Zimbabwe’s Emmerson Mnangagwa.
“The world needs more leaders who speak for the people,” Mnangagwa said.
“Zimbabwe stands ready to work with you and the American people to build a better, more prosperous and more peaceful world,” Mnangagwa said.
Mnangagwa and his government are expected to pursue the engagement and reengagement path to push Washington into removing sanctions imposed on 11 individuals and companies.
The US revised sanctions on Zimbabwe in March this year but Mnangagwa, his deputy Constantino Chiwenga, First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa and businessman Kuda Tagwirei remained on the list.
South African leader Cyril Ramaphosa also congratulated Trump saying : “In the global arena, we look forward to our Presidency of the G20 in 2025, where we will work closely with the US who will succeed us in the G20 Presidency in 2026,” he said.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will be banking on Trump’s decisive leadership to end the war with Russia.
Trump promised during his campaign that it’s a war he will end within days of his Presidency.
“I recall our great meeting with President Trump back in September, when we discussed in detail the Ukraine-U.S. strategic partnership, the Victory Plan, and ways to put an end to Russian aggression against Ukraine,” Zelensky said.
“I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the “peace through strength” approach in global affairs. This is exactly the principle that can practically bring just peace in Ukraine closer. I am hopeful that we will put it into action together.
We look forward to an era of a strong United States of America under President Trump’s decisive leadership. We rely on continued strong bipartisan support for Ukraine in the United States.”
Americans voted yesterday in an election described by many including former President Obama as close.
It remained peaceful and quiet in Michigan following Trump’s victory with those who spoke to Business Times hopeful that Trump’s election could change lives.
Theu spoke on healthcare mainly for seniors, inflation and improving the way of life of the people.
