Women leaders network launched

TENDAI BHEBE IN BULAWAYO

The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) was this week officially launched in Bulawayo aimed at encouraging and improving women’s leadership skills in different aspects.

Women Affairs Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development minister Sithembiso Nyoni said her ministry will continue to invest in women towards the movement to ensure that no woman is left behind.

“This speaks to all women and various groups of women whose voices and concerns may be overlooked in key decision making processes,” Nyoni said.

She said the network also works with true accountability from leaders on national commitments towards women’s rights, gender equality portion of women leadership and the increase in the national economy.

“We can only mobilise strength and enhance our efforts to make a difference once we have a full understanding as well as the scope of what we seek to address as women of Zimbabwe. It is vital that women voice out women’s needs. Indeed we anticipate that the efforts by the Bulawayo Provincial Chapter will be successful and moving forward,” Nyoni said.

Despite the fact that participation of women through gender equality is a prominent issue at the global, national, and district levels through the enactment of laws, policies, and conventions, women particularly in Zimbabwe continue to be under-represented across every area of political life by virtue of the lesser status ascribed to them by tradition and custom.

It should be noted that women’s rights under international conventions are universal norms to which all countries must adhere and women, like men, are entitled to exercise their human rights, which include fundamental rights and freedoms within the family and society at large.
