A United Nations agency responsible for child protection and inclusion, UNICEF, has applauded rural communities for their efforts to safeguard water resources.
UNICEF representative to Zimbabwe Tajudeen Oyewale said it was pleasing to see communities taking initiatives to maintain their sources of water.
“From the UNICEF perspective, we see important areas of work including the access to water, hygiene and sanitation,” Oyewale said.
His remarks comes at a time when the Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee 2021 Rural Livelihoods Assessment Report showed that almost all provinces recorded an increase in the access to improved water compared to 2020.
Oyewale said the communities have come together to put in place the water safety and security plan.
“They’re very clear on how they would do the water management. They’re even thinking of some community-based levies to sustain the water infrastructure.
“That’s the beauty of this linkage. What is special about these water schemes is that there is solar, meaning that it is environmentally friendly and climate resilient.
