Sandawana Mines, a subsidiary of mining giant Kuvimba Mining House, has been hailed by traditional leaders in Mberengwa district,  Midlands Province for engaging in projects that are benefiting the community.

The company has injected over US$56m to resuscitate the mine that had closed down due to viability challenges.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement in Mberengwa organised by the mining giants, Chief Ngungumbane emphasised the need to have communities benefiting from their resources and thanked the mining firm for massive steps in the right direction.

“I want to thank Kuvimba Mining House for remembering us as chiefs. You came in 2019 and today you have honoured us as chiefs for arranging this engagement,” he said.

He added:“I want to thank you because you have remembered the people of Mberengwa. Communities must benefit from the natural resources being exploited and for that we want to thank you.”

Chief Ngungumbane said Sandawana Mines should change the once marginalised community into a town with key facilities.

“We do not want a situation where the workers travel to Zvishavane to access banking facilities and buy groceries. That should all be here,” he said.

The event was attended by 15 chiefs from the Mberengwa district.

Sandawana Mines has also been hailed for women and youth empowerment through its recruitment exercise that has seen young men and women from the community being prioritised.
