Senator Angeline Tongogara, the widow of former ZANLA commander, general Josiah Magama Tongogara, has donated five tonnes of rice to a refugee camp in Chipinge.
Tongogara Refugee Camp is home to more than 15 000 refugees.
The Mashonaland Central senator was accompanied by her last-born child, Nyaradzo, and first grandson who was named after the late Tongogara.
She said: “I would also want to give you hope and peace, that peace will prevail in your respective countries, a conducive environment and that it will be restored so that you can return home. “
Tongogara thanked the residents of Chipinge for accepting the refugees in their area.
She urged the refugees to reciprocate the humble gesture by behaving well and respecting the laws and regulations of Zimbabwe.
In an interview with Business Times, Nyaradzo said she was humbled with the way people were living in the camp and will play a part in supporting the refugees and making sure that her father’s name continues to give hope and unity to everyone.“I’m totally out of words. This is a kind gesture that I have witnessed here.
“It’s different from what I have been visualising in my mind. We as the Tongogara family will play our part and we will try to ensure that we give help where we can.
Already we have a scholarship. We will try to give help to those who are bright but failing to go to university,” Nyaradzo said.
Leaders at the Tongogara refugees’ camp pleaded with Amai Tongogara to facilitate the establishment of a supermarket at the camp.
