SYDNEY SAIZE IN MUTARE
The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) Manicaland Province chapter patron, Kenneth Muchina has implored journalists in the province to strive to start-up businesses that can economically empower them in the future.
The Mutare businessman said this would ensure that journalists won’t be tempted to accept bribes, tarnishing their and the profession’s image.
“It is my hope that journalists are empowered in starting their businesses of interest to lessen the obvious temptation of accepting bribes as a result of poverty. We need to work together to ensuring they get what they deserve,” said Muchina at belated World Press Freedom Day commemorations held in the eastern border city.
Muchina also bemoaned the low remuneration of the journalists in the country and called on media houses to improve on the salaries.
He said journalists should report objectively, fairly and truthfully at all times. The businessman said journalists from across the country should call for empowerment so they desist from being dependent on powerful and influential individuals.
The ZUJ Manicaland chapter chairperson Ray Bande said it was pathetic that journalists in the region still delved in petty fights without focusing on working together.
