Sewer nightmare for Gweru residents

Raw effluent has been flowing from a burst sewer pipe in Gweru’s Ascot suburb for the past three months.

There are now growing fears of a possible outbreak of deadly diseases such as typhoid and cholera.

The burst sewer pipe is the main sewer pipe connecting Claremont Park, Tinshill, and Ascot suburbs.

Gweru Residents Association secretary general, Taurai Mukarati, told 98.4FM News that the local authority needs to urgently address the matter as it has  “been more than three months now with the sewer spilling”.

Mukarati said the spilling sewer was a ticking health bomb to society as people are now at risk of diarrheal diseases like typhoid.

He also raised fears that effluent from the sewer burst could contaminate borehole water in the vicinity.

“We have been trying to report these issues to the city council’s engineering department but they have proven that they have no solution. This makes us wonder, like how can they create drainage without a solution for when it bursts. It doesn’t make any sense,” Mukarati said.

He also said the Gweru City Council management was not taking the matter seriously.
