Minister Mhona commissions Khami Prestige Lounge, unveils new NHS equipment

TANAKA FETINANDI
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona yesterday commissioned the Khami Prestige Lounge at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (RGMIA) and unveiled new ground support equipment for National Handling Services (NHS).
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Mhona said the lounge reflects Zimbabwe’s identity through local design and cultural elements, offering travellers an authentic experience.
“Khami Prestige Lounge, now opened at RGM International Airport Gate 11 of the International Terminal, is a first-class facility aligned with global trends to meet the expectations of the modern traveller, thus setting a new benchmark for airport hospitality in Zimbabwe.
“Khami Prestige celebrates Zimbabwe’s identity, incorporating local design and cultural elements, helping to create an authentic, memorable experience for travellers from around the world.”
Mhona added that the facility also contributes towards the outcomes of the National Development Strategy-1 (NDS-1).
“This facility directly contributes towards achieving the outcomes of NDS-1 under the Transport and Infrastructure and Utilities Pillar, which seeks to create a robust and efficient transport system that underpins Zimbabwe’s journey towards achieving an upper-middle-income society by 2030.
“Further, NDS-1 recognises that a strong transport system is vital for economic growth as it facilitates trade, trans-investment, and supports the overall economy.”
The minister further noted that the new equipment would boost airport operations, support tourism and trade, create jobs, and stimulate demand for local services.
“In addition to the lounge, we are also commissioning critical ground support equipment. This may just be a step forward in the recapitalisation of our national aviation infrastructure.
“These investments are crucial to ensuring that airlines operating in and out of Zimbabwe receive timely, reliable, and professional service.
“This directly enhances operational efficiency, on-time performance, and the airlines’ institutional capacity, thereby making Zimbabwe Airports more competitive in the region.”
NHS Board Chairperson Adv. Godwin Nyengedza said the new ground support equipment would enhance operational capabilities and efficiency in handling aircraft and cargo.
“We are all gathered here not only to officially open a new world-class premium business hub, but we have also just had the opportunity to view and commission seven pieces of recently delivered ground service equipment.
“This ground service equipment, comprising one transporter, a conveyor belt, and five baggage tow tugs, will enhance our operational capabilities and efficiency in handling aircraft and cargo.”
Nyengedza also highlighted that other airports outside Harare have already benefited from the recapitalisation drive.
“All our stations outside Harare have already benefited from the recapitalisation drive, with Victoria Falls and Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport already having received one each of these baggage tow tugs.”
