Kombayi bounces back as Gweru mayor

MDC-T Ward 1 councilor, Hamutendi Kombayi, has bounced back  as the city’s mayor following an election held Tuesday, Business Times can report.

 

 

Kombayi was the Gweru mayor between 2013 and 2017.

But, was fired by the then Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere on allegations of criminal abuse of office.

The Gweru businessman, who is the son of former politician Patrick Kombayi polled 11  votes against Martin Chivhoko’s four votes.

 

The  elections were held  following the recent re-call of  Josiah Makombe by the Douglas Mwonzora led MDC-T, for  allegedly paying allegiance to MDC Alliance President, Nelson Chamisa.

 

Faith Kamutsungira who was identified as MDC-T Secretary for Local Governance administered the elections.

 

In his acceptance speech, Kombayi said.

 

“Let’s work together for Gweru. We want a better Gweru going forward,” he said.
