ELIAS AMGINYA IN GWERU
MDC-T Ward 1 councilor, Hamutendi Kombayi, has bounced back as the city’s mayor following an election held Tuesday, Business Times can report.
Kombayi was the Gweru mayor between 2013 and 2017.
But, was fired by the then Local Government Minister Saviour Kasukuwere on allegations of criminal abuse of office.
The Gweru businessman, who is the son of former politician Patrick Kombayi polled 11 votes against Martin Chivhoko’s four votes.
The elections were held following the recent re-call of Josiah Makombe by the Douglas Mwonzora led MDC-T, for allegedly paying allegiance to MDC Alliance President, Nelson Chamisa.
Faith Kamutsungira who was identified as MDC-T Secretary for Local Governance administered the elections.
In his acceptance speech, Kombayi said.
“Let’s work together for Gweru. We want a better Gweru going forward,” he said.
