It will not happen, says Leo on Mugabe’s exhumation

The late former President Robert Mugabe’s nephew Leo says the remains of the former leader will not be exhumed for burial at the National Heroes Acre as Chief Zvimba has no jurisdiction over the case.

Mugabe died in September 2019, two years after he was forced to resign in a military-backed transition.

He was buried at his rural homestead in Zvimba, in line with his wishes, according to the family.

Chief Zvimba ruled that the remains of Mugabe have to be exhumed and buried at the national shrine on July 1.

Former first lady Grace Mugabe was fined five cows and female goat to be paid by July 1.

“It will not happen. It will never happen. If they insist, we will take Chief Zvimba to the courts,” a defiant Leo told Business Times Monday.

He said the chief who has jurisdiction over the area, Chief Beperere, was at Mugabe’s burial.

“We don’t fall under Chief Zvimba but Beperere. I hope he [Chief Beperere] will not make the same mistake made by Chief Zvimba,” Leo said.

“The previous Chief Zvimba was buried in front of his kitchen not in a cave and I was there. Now they want to claim to be traditionalists.”

He accused the traditional leaders of dragging President Mnangagwa’s name in the mud by insisting for the exhumation of Mugabe’s remains.

Chief Zvimba recently summoned Grace to appear before his traditional court for “inappropriately” burying her husband.
