Hevoi FM’s news editor, Sammuel Njinga, has been named second runner-up in the Best Electronic Reporter of the Year (Radio) category at the annual Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) Media Awards, underscoring the growing influence of the provincial commercial radio station in championing responsible road use.
Hevoi FM is a unit of AB Communications, which also operates Business Times, ZiFM Stereo, 98.4FM Midlands and TruckAds, among other business interests.
The TSCZ honoured outstanding journalists for their contribution to road safety awareness during the annual Road Safety Media Awards ceremony held in Harare, recognising the media’s role in shaping public attitudes and influencing safer conduct on the country’s roads.
Njinga’s recognition follows a series of in-depth radio features and public service programmes aired on Hevoi FM, as well as news segments on ZiFM Stereo, focusing on defensive driving, pedestrian safety, public transport compliance and the dangers of speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.
His work has resonated strongly with listeners in Masvingo and surrounding communities, where Hevoi FM has established itself as a vital platform for local development discourse and civic education.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Deputy Minister of Transport Joshua Sacco said the media remains a critical partner in the national drive to curb road traffic accidents, which continue to claim lives and impose a heavy economic burden on the country.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and the media plays a pivotal role in educating, informing and influencing behavioural change among motorists, pedestrians and policy makers,” he said.
