Hailstorm destroys schools in Zaka
TATENDA CHIKARA IN ZAKA
Several schools in Zaka, a district in Masvingo Province, have been destroyed by hailstorm that swept across the district last Friday.
An infant was killed in Ndanga village after she was trapped by a falling tree.
The hailstorm, which left several people battling raging winds, blew classrooms and staff quarters roof tops.
The violent storm that left a trail of destruction in most learning institutions in the district also wrecked several houses and business centres in the district, with their roofs blown away.
Zaka North MP, Rabson Mavenyengwa, told Business Times he is appealing for resources to help rebuild the damaged infrastructure.
“We had a disaster on Friday where heavy winds swept into our area leaving a trail of destruction,” Mavenyengwa said.
He added: “Several schools and a number of houses were destroyed. We are appealing for some funding to renovate the destroyed infrastructure, as we speak some pupils have nowhere to learn from and the situation is dire.”
Authorities are now faced with an uphill task to repair schools whose infrastructure was destroyed by the hailstorm.
