Green climate funds for Chivi district

TATENDA CHIKARA IN CHIVI

Chivi district in Masvingo Province is set to receive green climate funds to go towards rehabilitation of dams that have reduced capacity due to siltation, Business Times can report.

Chivi’s district development coordinator for Chivi , Innocent Matingwina, said they were now waiting for the government to disburse the funds.

“We qualified to receive green climate funds for rehabilitation of dams. The challenge that we have is that the ministry of lands has not disbursed funds as yet,” Matingwina said.

He said they want to invest part of the money on training and conservation, especially on siltation in dams.

The majority of dams in Chivi have long dried up while others have little water left.

“Our Madende Dam used to rescue villagers through watering their vegetables, but due to siltation it has long dried up. This is also affecting livestock as they no longer get water to drink. We have since sunk three boreholes,” a councilor for ward 20 in Sese area Alec Nhundu said.

Another villager from Ward 11 who preferred not to be named  said: “Many livestock have died in this Virira Dam due to excessive sticky mud. If a weak cow gets in there (dam) to drink water it gets stuck and fails to get out.”
