Government is committed to strengthening public financial management as part of efforts to improve efficiency, transparency and accountability in the public sector, Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube has said.
Speaking at the launch of the Leadership Excellence in Africa’s Public sectors (LEAPS) program in the capital Harare this week, Professor Ncube also said it will go a long way in improving governance issues in the public sector.
Furthermore, Professor Ncube stated that it is essential to equip public sector leaders with skills that will help them navigate the complexities of today’s challenges.
“Public financial management is fundamental to good governance. It is imperative that we equip our leaders with the skills necessary to navigate the complexities of today’s challenges,” Professor Ncube said.
He added: “The LEAPS program, therefore, offers a unique opportunity for senior officials from various public financial management institutions in Zimbabwe and across the continent to engage, learn and lead with excellence.
“The goal is to equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively address the challenges faced in public service delivery. The program also features a variety of modules designed to enhance your leadership capabilities, alongside effective coaching and mentorship from esteemed leaders across Africa.”
He also said this initiative will foster a deep understanding of each role in shaping the future of the institutions and improving the lives of the citizens.
Participants will start a six-month leadership development journey that is especially suited to the African setting, he noted.
“As we launch this program, I want to acknowledge and commend the 15 senior officials chosen from our public financial management institutions. Your selection reflects your capabilities and we believe each one of you will bring invaluable insights and energy to the LEAPS program. I urge all of you to embrace this opportunity wholeheartedly; the knowledge and skills you acquire will be instrumental as you return to your respective roles.
“As part of this initiative, we will be hosting a national workshop. This workshop will serve to orient our officials to the LEAPS program, introduce them to essential knowledge platforms, and assist them in developing personalised leadership development plans. The plans will lay the groundwork for their executive coaching journey, ensuring that they are well-equipped to maximise the benefits of this program.”
