Govt, civil servants meet over salaries

BUSINESS REPORTER
The Government and its employees are meeting today on condition of service amid calls by the civil servants for a review in salaries in line with the rising cost of living.
In a statement yesterday, Public Service Labour and Social Welfare minister Paul Mavima said today’ meeting will see position papers presented for consideration.
“We wish to advise members of the Public Service that parties to the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) are currently finalizing papers for tabling in the Council for consideration. Accordingly, members are advised that the 2023 NJNC inaugural meeting has been pencilled for March 2,” he said.
Mavima said the round of negotiations is in line with the government’s commitment that a review will be done in the first quarter of 2023.
Mavima’s remarks come amid concerns by the civil servants who wanted the NJNC to be disbanded as it was not serving its purpose and are in favour of a collective Bargaining Chamber where parties meet as equals.
