‘Good corporate governance is bedrock of sustainability’

Good corporate governance is no longer a regulatory tick-box but the very foundation of business survival, the Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute of Zimbabwe has said.

Speaking to Business Times on the sidelines of the institute’s annual conference in Victoria Falls, CEO Dr Lovemore Gomera emphasised that governance must be central to corporate strategy if companies are to endure in an increasingly volatile and competitive business environment.

“So, good corporate governance is really the bedrock of corporate sustainability because then you are able to make sure that you bring in transparency, accountability, as well as compliance,” Dr Gomera said. “We usually talk, beyond compliance there’s governance.”

His warning comes at a time when corporates face growing scrutiny from investors, regulators, and international financiers, who increasingly consider governance standards as critical for unlocking capital, improving competitiveness, and ensuring resilience amid uncertainty.

Analysts note that governance failures have precipitated high-profile corporate collapses across sectors, highlighting the risks of sidelining transparency and accountability.

“Companies that embed governance at the heart of their operations are not only protecting shareholder value but also building trust with stakeholders ,” governance  expert, Nathan Simango told Business Times.

The conference drew senior executives, regulators, and policymakers confronting the dual challenge of driving profitability while meeting heightened governance and compliance expectations.

Experts attending the forum stressed that governance goes beyond meeting statutory requirements; it shapes corporate culture, informs decision-making, and ultimately determines a company’s ability to withstand shocks.
