ED sacks Chitando, elevates Kambamura in shock Mines Ministry shake-up

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has dismissed Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando, replacing him with his deputy, Dr Polite Kambamura.
The changes, announced Monday by Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya, take effect immediately.
“His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has in terms of Section 340, Subsection (1f), as read with Section 108, Subsection (1a) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, removed Winston Chitando as Cabinet Minister with immediate effect,” the first statement read.
In a separate communication, Dr Rushwaya confirmed the elevation of the deputy minister:
“In terms of Section 104, Subsection 1 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has appointed Polite Kambamura as Minister of Mines and Mining Development.”
Dr Kambamura, the Sanyati MP, has served as Deputy Minister of Mines since 2018. He was reappointed to that position in September 2023, a role he held until his promotion last night.
A seasoned mining engineer, Dr Kambamura earned his PhD in Mining Engineering in 2021. He also holds an MBA and a BSc Honours Degree in Mining Engineering. He is currently pursuing several additional qualifications, including another PhD in Entrepreneurship and Business Sciences at Chinhoyi University of Technology.
This year, he graduated from Bindura University of Science Education with a Masters Degree in Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sustainability, finishing as the Best Graduating Student in the programme and clinching the Vice Chancellor’s Prize.
