ED retains old guard in new Politburo

Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has retained most of the ruling party’s bigwigs into the politburo with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, party deputy Kembo Mohadi, national party chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri and secretary for Administration Obert Mpofu making it back into the presidium.

Zanu PF secretary for finance Patrick Chinamasa, Women’s League boss Mable Chinomona and war veterans’ secretary Douglas Mahiya made it back into the party leadership together with Lovemore Matuke who takes back the post of secretary for security.

Mike Bimha also retain him position of secretary of the commissariat.

Mnangagwa said he will announce the secretary for youth league and other portfolios in due course as consultations are underway.

Mnangagwa has also appointed 10 Central Committee members to represent all provinces.

Former Zanu Ndonga leader Wilson Kumbula has been appointed to represent Manicaland province while Angeline Tongogara will represent Mashonaland Central province.

Miriam Chikukwa will represent Harare while Paul Mangwana will represent Masvingo.

The party congress ended without incident contrary to speculation ahead of the indaba of potential fireworks and tussling for positions.

Mnangagwa said the party was not about contestations for top posts and saluted “political maturity” exhibited at the national congress that he officially closed on Saturday in Harare.

“We have finished with political maturity, discipline and focus. This is the Zanu PF way of doing things. Our party is not about contesting for leadership positions but policies which end poverty,” Mnangagwa said in his closing remarks.

“Our focus is on the future in the next five years. We cannot leave in the past but envision our party and country vision beyond 2030. I can only succeed with your support. Let us continue to work together for the continued dominance of our party.”

Mnangagwa said the party regalia was sufficient ahead of the next year elections due in July warning against abuse by senior leaders.

“Election campaign material is ready and will be distributed in due course. We have regalia for everyone. Our only problem is only to have it to the people without being abused or stolen,” he said.
