ED appoints five Constitutional Court judges

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed five judges of the Constitutional Court to be sworn in today.
Justices Paddington Garwe, Rita Makarau, Anne-Mary Gowora, Ben Hlatshwayo and Bharat Patel are expected to take oath before the Acting Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza.
Prior to their appointment, the five were acting judges of the Constitutional Court and they were among the 12 candidates that participated in the public interviews conducted in September last year.
Their appointment comes after the High Court last week ruled against the extension of Luke Malaba’s tenure as Chief citing that Malaba will not benefit from Constitutional Amendment 2 enacted by President Mnangagwa.
According to the High Court ruling, the extension of term provided by section 186 of the Constitution does not apply to any sitting judges of the Constitutional Court and Supreme Court.
