The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has said that female journalists should not be afraid to take up leadership positions.

Speaking at a leadership workshop held in the capital Harare last week, ZMC commissioner Susan Makore said the gender inequality in the newsrooms was a result of the lack of interest by female journalists, hoping that “someone nominates them”.

“If you have an interest in a certain position, show it and go for it. Don’t be ashamed because men will gladly take positions if women do not show interest,” Makore said.

She added: “It’s very crucial for women to have posts in leadership positions because it automatically means that their concerns and interests   are represented when it comes to decision making.”

Also speaking at the same event, a leadership expert, Rachel Adams urged female journalists to grab opportunities when they arise and never be afraid to take positions.

“It’s normal to be skeptical and nervous at times, but don’t ever shy away from taking up a leadership position when an opportunity arises,” Adam said.
