Chinhoyi councillors  have blocked the cash-strapped local authority’s plans to splurge  more than US$425 000 on  top of the range  vehicles for its  top management at a time the council is battling cash-flow  challenges, it has been learnt.

Business Times can report that at an ordinary council meeting on Monday this week,  Ward 11 councillor, Voster Mashevedzana,  who is also the chairperson of the Finance Committee proposed the cancellation of tender saying priority should be on efficient service delivery.

The motion was seconded by councillor Richard Vhitirinyu.

Other councillors voted to block the deal.

Contacted for a comment, Mashevedzanwa told Business Times: “As councillors it is of paramount importance to stop buying the cars and concentrate on effective and efficient service delivery to our residents.”

Vhitirinyu weighed in saying: “Management is not happy about the resolution passed on by the councilors to stop the purchasing of the vehicles.”

“But why would management want new cars when service delivery is at its worst?” he  asked.

Chinhoyi residents association treasury Tanaka Mururi commended the councillor’s decision.

“Considering that some workers have gone for four months without salaries, that will demotivate them seeing management driving top of the range cars.

“It’s a noble idea by the councillors to prioritize service delivery,” Mururi said.

Chinhoyi Town Clerk Maxwell Kaitano highlighted that cars were part of council’s top officials’ contract,

“There is a condition of service for directors which include vehicles and other packs and that must be considered,” Kaitano told the Business Times.
