Corporates in Byo should adopt streets

Government has urged stakeholders, including corporates in Bulawayo to adopt streets which they will be cleaning regularly, a move which will help re-create the image of the city.

The call was made by Bulawayo provincial director for economic development, Simon Saunyama, while addressing stakeholders in Bulawayo this week.

“We need committed stakeholders to come on board and we agree as Bulawayo on street adoption for maintenance. This would make our city better,” Saunyama said.

Bulawayo City Council (BCC) identified 43 waste hotspots in the central business district, with five of these being major ones.

Saunyama said the local authority was trying within its capacity to ensure that the vision of the clean-up campaign is achieved.

“I want to applaud the Bulawayo City Council for working tirelessly to be good stewards of the environment. Without the commitment of the citizens it would have been a mammoth task for BCC alone.”

In 2018, President Emmerson Mnangagwa launched the national clean-up campaign and declared the first Friday of each calendar month as a national clean-up day.

Environmental Management Agency director of environmental protection, Christopher Mushava, said stakeholders should play their part to ensure a clean environment.
