Concern over drugs abuse

A non-governmental organisation, Speak Out Africa Trust (SOAT), says the government should tighten laws on illicit drugs and brews as these are destroying the future of potential leaders.

SOAT chairman, Christopher Shingirai Dickson, said the government has to step in and put deterrent measures as the rate of drug abuse and trade is increasing.

“The rate at which crystal meth has taken precedence in our streets over sanity has equally become an aggravating matter. Government must put in place tough measures and punish those behind such malpractices with stiffer penalties against offenders,” Dickson said.

He added: “Low-end brands of illegally manufactured spirits, Krango and Red Barretta are sold at incredibly low prices to entice our population’s most vulnerable segments to buy. These items with excessive alcohol content ultimately ruin their lives and harm their body and mental well-being.

He said as the nation speaks out against drug abuse, those it called upon for remedy are involved in a way.

“It is their behaviour and policies that do not give hope to people especially the youth hence they “destroy themselves”,” Dickson said.

Speak Out Africa Trust is a campaign initiated by Africans to speak out against injustice in Africa and in the process effect positive change.
