Chivi villagers face hunger
TATENDA CHIKARA IN CHIVI
Villagers in the arid district of Chivi, Masvingo Province are facing starvation as most crops in the area are showing signs of moisture stress, Business Times can report.
They said crops were slowly drying up.“We had tried to farm large pieces of land this year but it seems we are not lucky. The rains have just disappeared at a time it is needed most.
“Most crops especially maize had reached tussling level, this is the time which we expect rains to fall so that we can have a bumper harvest,” bemoaned one Madamombe villager in Chivi North.
Another villager, who requested not to be named said: “We are no longer getting into our farms as there is nothing to do there. All the crops have dried up, we have only left with a few crops which are still fighting this intensive heat.”
Felix Chitsaka, the kraal head of Chitsaka village under chief Madyangove said the situation was dire.
“This is starvation which has approached us.
As for maize it is now a write off. We are no longer expecting anything. We are now appealing to the government for urgent assistance before people die of hunger,” Chitsaka said.
