Pres Mnangagwa speaks out, says Bulawayo has nothing to do with attack

BULAWAYO – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has confirmed to the Business Times that he is safe following an explosion as he left the stage at White City stadium.

“l am more worried about you than myself,” he said.

President Mnangagwa had just finished addressing thousands of supporters when the explosion went off. Reports say Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is also safe but his wife Marry has been admitted to hospital. President Mnangangwa has already visited the hospital where she is admitted.

At the hospital, President Mnangagwa said the attack did not come from the people of Bulawayo. “This is not from the people of Bulawayo. These are my normal enemies. The attempts have been so many, this is not the first time. My office has been broken into several times. They tried poisoning me I survived.”

He said the attack did not heighten the tension ahead of the July 30 elections.

Several people are reportedly injured but the extent of the injuries has not yet been established. Some of the injured are at Mater Dei Hospital and Mpilo Hospital

The area around the VIP stage has been cordoned off and security personnel are collecting evidence.
