Borders re-opening excites informal traders

SAMUEL NJINGA IN MASVINGO
Informal traders in Masvingo have commended the opening of borders saying this would help strengthen their businesses, Business Times can report.
Government last week resolved to re-open all ports of entry following the continued decline in Covid-19 pandemic cases.
“We are now able to go into neighbouring countries such as South Africa and buy commodities at an affordable price. Business was no longer feasible. It was generally very difficult for us to manoeuvre an inch,” Peter Chikwama, the chairperson of the Leopold Takawira Flea Market Centre in Masvingo told Business Times.
Finance and Economic Development deputy minister, Clemence Chiduwa, also said the re-opening of borders would promote the livelihood of the ordinary people in the country.
Chiduwa also said the move would help stabilise prices of goods as there will be competition in the market.
“This is very important given that prices have been escalating unnecessarily. We expect competition to take place. This will help in determining price stability which will subsequently benefit the consumers,” he said.
“Our focus cannot be achieved without the involvement of the international community hence the need for borders to be opened for the smooth running of trade.”
Government has introduced national development strategy 1 for the purpose of reviving the economy.
