Be a role model as a progressive leader

PAUL NYAUSARU AND CHIEDZA KADARE

A role model is someone who inspires others by demonstrating their ideals, attitude or deeds. Leaders act as role models by demonstrating integrity, perseverance, positivity and confidence. Others aspire to be like their role models. A role model leader is one who inspires subordinates and exhibits leadership excellence in many aspects of the business. The following traits are evident in every leader:

  • Present a Positive Attitude

As a leader exhibit strength, calm, and perseverance even during stressful times, and instill the same within your team members. Having a positive attitude can be contagious, and it makes the team stronger. A positive team will be better able to deal with problems and overcome with challenges in the workplace.

  • Exhibit Integrity at All Times

A good leader will make decisions for the betterment of the business as a whole and not just for him or herself. Team members will respect a leader that shows concern about the business and those who work within the organization. A leader needs take responsibility for their actions and show appreciation. When a team performs above expectation, they should be rewarded so as to motivate them.

  • Lead and Inspire Your Team

A leader who leads by example in a responsible manner, will drive team members to follow suit. A good leader motivates his team and inspires members to reach their full potential. Leadership role models don’t automatically come by, one has to work to attain them. As a leader, take stock of your skills and habits. Ask yourself and identify areas that need to be developed. Harvard Business Review suggests acting as an “organizational anthropologist.”

  • Get to Know Your Employees

Employees are the greatest assets and have lives outside of the workplace. It is important to understand that they have families, interests, and occasional problems that might interfere with their performance. Take time to know them better and plan activities and outings that result in team building. Doing so shows that you respect them as individuals, both in and out of the workplace.
